The Netflix series Wednesday (2022), created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar with Tim Burton as a director for several episodes, gives a fresh yet gothic twist to the beloved character from The Addams Family. The story follows Wednesday Addams, the dark, witty, and deadpan daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams, as she navigates teenage life at a mysterious boarding school.
The series begins when Wednesday is expelled from her regular high school after a revenge stunt involving piranhas in the school pool, meant to punish bullies who hurt her brother Pugsley. Her parents, Gomez and Morticia, decide to enroll her in Nevermore Academy, a special institution for “outcasts” — people with supernatural abilities or unique identities. Nevermore is no ordinary school; it is a place where sirens, werewolves, gorgons, and psychic seers learn and grow together.
Initially, Wednesday rejects the idea of fitting in. She despises authority, refuses to bond with classmates, and is more focused on escaping the school. However, things take a sharp turn when she discovers that Nevermore and the surrounding town of Jericho are plagued by a series of brutal murders committed by a mysterious monster. Wednesday’s sharp instincts and natural curiosity push her to investigate, even when adults discourage her.
At Nevermore, she reluctantly befriends her colorful roommate, Enid Sinclair, a cheerful werewolf who struggles with her own transformation issues. The contrast between Enid’s bright personality and Wednesday’s gloomy nature creates both tension and an unusual bond. She also develops complicated relationships with other students like Xavier Thorpe, a talented artist with psychic abilities, and Bianca Barclay, a competitive siren.
As Wednesday digs deeper into the mystery, she begins to experience psychic visions inherited from her mother, Morticia. These visions connect her to past events, particularly involving a boy named Joseph Crackstone, a fanatical pilgrim who once sought to destroy outcasts. Wednesday learns that Crackstone’s legacy still haunts Jericho, and someone is trying to resurrect his mission.
The monster terrorizing the area is revealed to be a Hyde, a creature that transforms violently under emotional stress and is controlled by a master. Wednesday suspects several people, including Xavier, her therapist Dr. Kinbott, and even her parents. However, through her investigation, she uncovers that the real Hyde is Tyler Galpin, the seemingly kind local barista and son of Jericho’s sheriff. He was manipulated into his dark side by Marilyn Thornhill (actually Laurel Gates), a teacher at Nevermore who seeks revenge against the Addams family and other outcasts for her family’s past.
The season builds toward an explosive climax where Crackstone is resurrected through dark magic. Wednesday, with the help of her friends, family, and even Thing (the disembodied hand), fights to stop Laurel and defeat Crackstone before he destroys Nevermore.
By the end, Wednesday realizes that while she resists attachment, her experiences at Nevermore have given her true friendships, trust, and a sense of belonging. The series blends supernatural mystery, coming-of-age struggles, and dark humor, making it both a gothic detective story and a character study of Wednesday’s growth.
